Personal papers of Childs contain correspondence, financial and legal papers, and miscellany pertinent to Rives' retirement in Richmond, Va., and particularly to his investments and his interest in Randolph-Macon College and St. Andrew's Church, Norfolk, Va. Issues of the Dacor Bulletin, 1976-1984, are included as are a copy of his memoirs and of a post 1934 article "The March of Modernism in Persia." Correspondents include Casanova scholars Marco Leeflang and Francis L. Mars, college professor Herrick B. Young and Rives' companion Hilda Noel Schroetter.

James Rives Childs was born February 6, 1893 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended the Virginia Military Institute before graduating from Randolph-Macon College in 1912, then earned a master of arts from Harvard University in 1915.
